What are hydraulic crimping machines?
Hydraulic crimping machines, often called Swaging Machines are machines designed to form metal on multiple applications such as metal tubes, ferrules, wire or rod.
In the hydraulics industry the most common application is the crimping of hydraulic hose assemblies. A hydraulic crimping machine reduces the diameter of a metal fitting onto the end of a hose. Making sure the hydraulic hose fitting is secure on the end of the hose is important for the safety and maintenance of any hydraulic equipment that it operates in.
To ensure this, the fittings and ferrules are crimped to a specific diameter at high pressure. For the correct diameter crimping machines are calibrated to a set diameter and specific dies (usually 8 of them) are used inside the hydraulic crimping head. Because of the wide range of applications crimping machines are used for and the high pressure nature of hydraulic equipment it is important that machines are crimped to the correct diameter that is provided by the hose and fittings manufacturer and the machine is adequately serviced and used by a trained operator. For this, the BFPA (British fluid power association) has a wide range of safety, training and regulatory information available for the industry.
Hydraulic crimping machines often come with a range of other supporting machinery to put together a hydraulic hose assembly. Cutting machines are single or three phase machines that can cut the hose to the required length whilst skiving machines take the first layer of rubber off the hose in order to achieve the correct fit of the ferrule onto the hydraulic hose. Skiving is not always necessary for hydraulic hose and it is often dependent on the wire count of the hose itself and the manufacturer of the hydraulic hose and fitting.
Hydraulic hose and fittings are often paired together from the same manufacturer. With the hose being matched up to a specific ferrule and fitting designed to be used as one system. This is why it’s important and best practice to always use matched hydraulic hose and fittings in your hose assembly.
